Love/Hate
Spike Lee recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of his controversial film Do the Right Thing @ Lincoln Center last Thursday. This film broke barriers beyond belief in 1989 by bringing racial conflict in a multi-ethnic community to the big screen. Unheard of at the time. I got my 1st internship with Spike back in 1998 working in the Art Department on the film Summer of Sam.
The crazy thing about this piece is that when I decided to move back to NY in 2002, I lived in (Bedford-Stuyvesant) Brooklyn on Stuyvesant Avenue.....the same street (2 blocks down) from where this entire movie was shot. Til this day you can still see traces of the Mike Tyson Mural on the wall above the space where Sal's Pizzeria once was. I think a restoration project of some sort should be geared towards bringing the block back to life as it appeared in the film.
This scene featuring a much younger Bill Nunn as Radio Raheem is probably one of my top 5 scenes of all-time.
Spike Lee, one of the greatest film visionaries of all-time.

Berlin artist Anne Brenneke crafted these quilts entitled “Life After Death." They feature 4 deceased rap legends: Eazy-E, The Norotious B.I.G., J Dilla and Big L. Not that you would but they are large enought to cover a queen size bed.

Villa Berkel - Veenendaal, Netherlands

This house designed by Paul de Ruiter creates an open environment which give the residents the feeling of living outside. The trees around the house provide shade, which means it's important to ensure that as much light can enter the house as possible. The house is entirely oriented to the secluded garden in the rear. Every room in the villa looks directly out on to this garden, because three of the four facades (including the bathroom) are made of glass.
The wooden terrace, partly covered by a wooden awning creates an additional feature. This gives it the appearance of floating above the ground. Ponds have been laid on both sides, so that the house too, appears to be raised above ground level, emphasising the lightness of the building.

OG ACG's

ACG Mowabb

ACG Wildwood
These are the original Nike ACG's (presently being retroed) released back in the early 1990's. Nike crafted the light weight, breathable ACG to go the distance in the wilderness. However, we city slickers saw these as flavorful alternatives to basketball and casual sneakers. Fresh cats would match em up with Polo Rugbys and the water-proof Gore-Tex jackets. See Grand Puba.
*Check out the Tinker Hatfield interview for more history on the ACG.

Worry Dolls

In Guatemalan culture, it's said that if you tell each Worry Doll a worry before bedtime, and place the dolls under your pillow, they'll make the worries go away by morning. I remember some years ago my mother having this same little wooden box on her night stand filled with these tiny hand-made figures. I'm guessing they were a souvenir from a previous vacation. However, when I was younger, I always thought it was some type of voodoo capsule that she would use on me whenever I would get in trouble at school. Now why would Moms go and do a crazy thing like that...
Now and days you can get them at Urban Outfitters. Go figure.

Snake Bites for Her

Going through some old photos on my camera I see these snake bracelets and necklaces at my friend Evelyn's showroom. I can't recall who makes them but they are pretty bad ass.

Half-Penny, Half-Amazing

Nike Air 1/2 Cent

The Nike Air 1/2 Cent is basically a mesh of the Penny I-IV's. It's been a while since Nike has totally blown me away with an on-court shoe that's nice enough to wear off-court. The stand-out feature is the foamposite material seen throughout the upper. Scheduled for March release. With a $190 price tag (geez), how could you not drop 30 pts and 12 assists in theses???
Between 1992 - 1998 Anfernee Hardaway was one of the best to ever play the game and had one of the most impressive shoe contracts to prove it. Sidelined by a devastating knee injury in the 1997-98 season, he never regained his momentum. Since then he was traded throughout the league until being waived by the Miami Heat in 08. His footwear legacy lives on.

Classic Material: Maxwell - Matrimony: Maybe You by
This was the cut. 10 years old! I need the music of today to sound just as good as this classic. I remember unsuspectingly meeting Maxwell last year. He was buying some Jordan's @ the AS sneaker boutique in LES. I thought he was somebody I may have gone to college with until it hit me (5 min. into our convo). Genuinely nice dude.
He has a three part album entitled Black Summer's Night. The 1st of the set is due out later this year. The 2nd is due in 2010, the third in 2011.

Pinky Ring 6-shooter

This has to be the most gangsterfied ring of all time. It has a 2mm cylinder pinfire. The engraving is spectacular. Not advocating guns but there's an art form to everything.

Stress, what stress???

Ladies and Gents, next level bathing experience is upon us. Introducing the overflow bathtub from KÄSCH. Hear the sound of overflowing water reminiscent of bathing among a waterfall, while embraced by nature (not included of course). If I ever have it laid out like this you can just call me John Legend because "I'm ready to go right nowww." Some dudes may be skeptic of baths vs. showers but trust me...go to their site if you're still not a believer.

Transformer Watch

This was the time piece that killed more time than anything. If you had one of these you weren't paying attention in Algebra class for sure. I don't know who made them but they came out with various colors...I want to say during the late 80's - early 90's.

Code Name: Snake Eyes

If there's one thing I know from my childhood...it's G.I. Joe. This replica 12" Snake Eyes by Sideshow Collectibles is detailed down to the boot laces! I'm aware there's a buzz going on from the G.I. Joe movie, which btw looks disgustingly lame from the authenticity to the casting. Yeah, well that's Hollywood for ya. I could go into detail based on what I've seen thus far but I'll save my energy for positive things.
ANYWAY, for those interested in having a "real" piece of nostalgia check out the other figures for 09 release. They aren't playing around with these.

Retro Gals

Illustrator and animation designer Shane Giles creates these vintagesque images reminiscent of pin-up art from the golden age of the 1920's - 1960's. His razor-sharp line weights and use of color give his work a stylized, classic look that keeps me intrigued to see more.

The Drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright

One of the great innovators in the history of architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright (1876-1959) experimented with organic designs and building systems. Shown are examples of his imaginative genius applied to paper. Typically Wright joined his structures to the landscape, making it an integral part of the surrounding environment. One of the 1st architects to conceive virtually every detail of both the external design and the internal fixtures, including furniture, carpets, windows, doors, tables and chairs, light fittings and decorative elements. A lot of his structures are now used in films, television, and print media to represent the future. Crazy right?
He was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time."

Classic TV Bad Asses

A-Team Van - 1983 GMC Van (the red rims are mean!)

Starsky-and-Hutch - 1975 Ford Gran Torino

Knight Rider (K.I.T.T.) - 1982 Pontiac Trans Am

Smokey and the Bandit - 1977 Pontiac Trans Am
I know you still have these classic wheels in your mental database. They represent a period of American television when vehicles possessed personality and would be the lead characters of the show. I would drive any one of these right now!
